Frequently Asked Questions About This Position
Q: | Are there any physical requirements? |
A: | At times this is a physically demanding job. You will need to be able to carry gear (lines, wires, ratchets, 2" gasoline pumps, etc.) at least 200 ft, plus have the ability to climb a 10-20 ft ladder. Tolerance to extreme weather conditions is essential as you will be out on tow when it is 100+ degrees in the summer and zero degrees in the winter. |
Q: | Do I need to provide my own lifejacket and handheld radio? |
A: | No, we issue every deckhand their own lifejacket and handheld radio that they are responsible for. |
Q: | Will I be working on holidays? |
A: | It depends on the schedule you will be placed in, but expect to work some of the major holidays throughout the year. We have crews working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year including ALL major holidays. The majority of our customers/vendors are working even on major holidays so we must do the same. |
Q: | I live a few hours away making it hard to commute daily, can I stay on your boats instead of going home? |
A: | The majority of our boats are "dinner bucket" boats with no sleeping quarters or the required amenities to live aboard the boat. With this being said, we request that all applicants live in the local area (no more than an hour away from Parkersburg) since you will be commuting to work from your residence on a daily basis. |
Q: | What is your pay period? |
A: | We operate on a weekly pay period, Monday-Sunday. Our employees are paid via direct deposit and most usually are paid weekly on every Tuesday unless the banks are closed on Monday for a federal holiday. |
Q: | I want to skip being a deckhand and jump right to being a captain? Can I do that? |
A: | Sorry, doesn't work that way. USCG requirements state that anyone desiring to become a captain must serve at least 360 12-hour days as a deckhand before even being considered for a steersman's license (basically a learner's permit to operate a towboat). |
As a reminder, no potential candidates for the position can be granted access to the facility without prior appointment due to security procedures in place.
